Advertising

Advertising (often abbreviated to ADV) is the paid strategic communication process through which a company or brand promotes its products, services, or ideas to a target audience. It is a form of marketing communication that uses various media to convey a commercial message with the aim of persuading, informing, or influencing consumers' purchasing decisions.

2. What is it for / Why is it important

Advertising is essential for raising awareness, generating interest, and stimulating demand for a product or service. Its main objectives are threefold:

  • Inform: announce new products, communicate their benefits, or create awareness about a brand.

  • Persuade: Convincing consumers that your offering is the best, prompting them to take action (such as a purchase or switching brands).

  • Remember: Keeping the brand "top of mind" in the consumer, reminding them of the need or benefits of a product.

It is crucial for building a brand identity, creating emotional connections with audiences, and ultimately increasing sales and revenue.

3. When to use it / In what context is it useful?

Advertising is used at every stage of a product's life cycle and across a wide range of channels. Contexts include:

  • Traditional media (Offline): print ads (newspapers, magazines), TV and radio spots, billboards.

  • Digital media (Online): Search engine optimization (SEM) campaigns, display advertising on websites, video ads on platforms like YouTube, social media advertising (Facebook, Instagram, etc.), and email marketing.

  • Product launches: to generate anticipation and inform the market of a new product.

  • Branding campaigns: to strengthen the image and values of a brand over time.

4. Practical example

  • Iconic example: Nike's "Just Do It" campaign. Launched in 1988, it didn't just advertise shoes, but associated the brand with an attitude of determination and overcoming limits. This is a perfect example of institutional advertising that promotes the organization and its values, going beyond the individual product.

  • A modern example: Coca-Cola's "Share a Coke" campaign, which replaced the logo on bottles with people's names, encouraging consumers to find and share the product. This campaign combined a physical experience (the product) with a powerful digital and social media impact.

Advertising should not be confused with marketing . Advertising is a component of marketing. Marketing is the broader strategic process that includes market research, pricing, product distribution, and, of course, promotion, of which advertising is one of the most visible levers.
