Term Definition
Barter

"Bartering", also known as "advertising exchange" or "exchange of goods for advertising", is a commercial agreement in which goods or services are exchanged directly for advertising space, with little or no use of money. It is, to all intents and purposes, a form of bartering applied to the marketing, media and communications sector.

What is it used for / Why is it important

Bartering allows a company (advertiser) to "pay" for an advertising campaign (on TV, radio, print, web) using its own products or services instead of cash. It is an important strategy for:

  • Optimising cash flow: It allows advertising to be done even with limited monetary budgets.

  • Clearing surplus stock: It is an efficient way to assign value to warehouse stock, unsold items or products at risk of obsolescence.

  • Accessing new channels: It allows SMEs or start-ups to access media spaces that would otherwise be economically prohibitive.

When is it used / In what context is it useful

Bartering is common in three main contexts:

  1. Traditional Media Buying: A company agrees with an advertising concessionaire or broadcaster (TV, radio) to provide goods (e.g., cars for a production, prizes for a competition) in exchange for adverts.

  2. Influencer Marketing: This is the most widespread form of bartering in the digital sphere. A brand sends its products free of charge to a creator or influencer, who in return agrees to create and publish content (posts, stories, videos) featuring them.

  3. Digital Partnerships: Two websites or blogs mutually exchange banners, links or "guest posts" (hosted articles) to reach their respective audiences without economic transactions.

Practical example

  • Example 1 (Media): A wine company pays for advertising space in a trade magazine by supplying a case of its wines for an event organised by the publication.

  • Example 2 (Influencer): A sportswear brand sends its new shoe model to a fitness influencer in exchange for three Instagram stories and a post in which the influencer wears them.

  • Example 3 (Barter Company): A furniture manufacturer wants a TV campaign. A Barter Company (a specialised intermediary) purchases the TV slots for €50,000 and "resells" them to the manufacturer, who pays the company by providing furniture worth €50,000. The Barter Company will then resell the furniture through non-competing channels to monetise the operation.

Extra Insight

Although bartering with influencers (often called "gifted" or "in exchange for visibility") is very common, it is essential to manage it with transparency. Regulations (such as the IAP Digital Chart) require that the promotional nature of the content is always explicit (e.g., with #Ad, #SuppliedBy), even if there has been no monetary payment, to protect the consumer.

Synonyms: Bartering, Exchange of goods, Advertising exchange, Advertising for goods, Gifted (in the influencer context)
